Kindergarten Curriculum

At WDS the Kindergarten program prides itself on creating a warm and nurturing environment where children develop a love of learning and build positive social connections through an individualized, child-centered approach to each student with the intention that each child will glow and grow in every domain including the social, emotional, intra and inter–personal, speech and language, physical, and academic areas. The Kindergarten accomplishes this through the introduction and exposure to hands-on, concrete and real-life experiences including the wonders of nature that are available on our beautiful, 26 acres on the Long Island Sound, a print rich classroom and a developmentally appropriate learning environment.

List of 8 items.

  • Language Arts

Our balanced literacy program emphasizes the teaching of reading, emphasizing a strong foundation in phonemic awareness, building a solid sight word vocabulary and strengthening comprehension skills. Our print rich environment includes word walls, classroom libraries and cross-curricular experience charts, supplemented with small reading groups and extensive daily writing activities through both teacher-guided and independent formats, which include journal and independent opportunities.  The students review all letter sounds as they learn how to form both upper and lower case letters correctly. They co-author a number of collaborative and individual books. Our literacy curriculum aligns with and in many cases, exceeds Common Core Standards.
  • Math

Our math curriculum provides a hands-on approach to understanding basic concepts using manipulatives/games, graphs and calendar based activities. They learn to count by ones, twos, fives, and tens through one hundred and beyond. The students will compare and order numbers, engage in the concepts of addition, subtraction, estimation, calendar, patterns and measurement.
  • Technology

Students learn to manipulate a mouse, log in and out of a program and are introduced to the basics of key boarding through the Success-Maker Program. Math and reading skills are enhanced using the interactive, individualized Success-Maker Program.  In class, the children use Star Falls, a game-based, academic program to enhance literacy and math skills.
  • Science

Hands-on science instruction includes the study of the distinction between the living and non-living:  the human body, the five senses, trees, plants and seeds, animals, butterflies, the weather, the solar system, light and dark, composting, trees, geology and tide pools.
  • Social Studies

Our social studies unit incorporates American holidays and communities. The students learn and recite the Pledge of Allegiance, and sing and many of the patriotic songs of our country.
  • Judaic Studies

A primary focus of our Limudei Kodesh curriculum is to foster a love of Torah, Mitzvot, Am Yisrael, Klal Yisrael and Hashem. Students learn through daily tefillah, weekly parsha stories and plays, our Kabbalat Shabbat performance, and interactive and multi-sensory holiday activities. Children work to create meaningful artifacts in honor of each of the chagiim.
  • Hebrew

Hebrew language is incorporated into every facet of learning through simple instructions, sight words, daily tefillah, Hebrew songs, games and blessings. Our Hebrew education is enhanced by the presence of Israeli teachers speaking and interacting on a daily basis.
  • Israel

The importance of the existence of the State of Israel is emphasized throughout the year, through constant discussion, singing of HaTikvah on a daily basis, and other fun-filled activities, culminating with a virtual trip to Israel in honor of Yom HaAtzmaut.
