8th Grade Pickles a Novel to Life
Eighth grade engaged in some hands-on learning and made their own pickles!
Learning how to layer garlic, dill, and Kirbies in a vinegar brine, the students explored this classic culinary practice of immigrants on the Lower East Side and connected to the life and times of the novel Uprising, by Margaret Peterson Haddix, which captured the birth of worker rights and unionization amid the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire of 1911.
Pickles played an important role in preserving vegetables by some of the poorest immigrants. Students' novel-inspired pickle brands included Nickels for Pickles, Picket's Pickles, Tenement Tom Pickles, and Factory Flame Pickles!
