In first grade students are welcomed into the elementary school and introduced to separate Judaic Studies and General Studies teachers. Students continue to build skills necessary for lifelong learning. One highlight of the first grade academic year is the Chag HaSiddur presentation, when students receive their siddurim and begin to build their connection to God through prayer.
In the second grade students further develop the social, emotional, and cognitive foundations they focused on during first grade. The 2nd grade curriculum is a unique blend of experiential learning and direct instruction. One of the highlights of the second grade year is the Chag HaTorah presentation when students receive their own chumashim in front of their families and friends.
In third grade students focus their learning on writing in both Hebrew and English. Students explore different forms of writing such as Expository, Persuasive and Narrative Writing. Children learn b'chavruta "in pairs" and hone their textual analysis skills. They begin studying Rashi and are encouraged to explore their own questions on the text.
As in third grade, fourth graders continue to focus on making meaningful connections between what they learn in class and their lives outside of school. A variety of learning experiences (research and performance projects, and games) make the content accessible to each student and help them personalize the learning. Students are introduced to Navi as they study Sefer Yehoshua (the Book of Joshua).
With a strong focus on small group and pair work, fifth graders further develop their group-work skills; share their interpretive questions on a variety of texts; and construct deeper understandings by listening and responding to one another. This focus on questions, answers and a respect for multiple perspectives is central to English Language Arts, Social Studies, Chumash, Navi and in particular in their study of Mishna, which is introduced in 5th grade.
